Understanding Primitive Reflexes

Why They Matter in Early Childhood Development

Primitive reflexes are the automatic movements babies are born with, such as the startle reflex, rooting reflex, or grasp reflex.

These early reflexes help with survival in the first weeks of life and are part of normal brain and nervous system development.

As babies grow, these reflexes usually integrate (fade away). This makes way for more complex skills like crawling, walking, writing, and playing sport.

Why Do Primitive Reflexes Matter?

Primitive reflexes help build the foundation for:

  • Posture
  • Coordination
  • Balance
  • Sensory processing

If they don’t integrate as expected, some children may show signs such as:

  • Difficulty with coordination or balance
  • Trouble sitting still or concentrating
  • Delays in crawling or walking
  • Sensitivities to sound, light, or movement

⚠️ These signs don’t always mean there’s a problem, but they can sometimes suggest retained reflexes, which may be worth exploring further with a qualified health professional.

Supporting Healthy Development

At Caring Hands Chiropractic (Bowral), we are passionate about supporting children and families through every stage of growth.

While chiropractors don’t diagnose or treat developmental delays, we often:

  • Work alongside parents and educators
  • Collaborate with allied health professionals
  • Support healthy posture and movement patterns

Our approach is always gentle, respectful, and guided by current understanding of childhood development.
